Bodywork For Hormone Balancing

Many bodywork therapies can be used to balance hormones. From aromatherapy and reflexology to Reiki and Cranial Sacral Therapy (CST), there are several gentle, natural options to optimize wellness through balancing hormones. This article will briefly explain the function of hormones, the necessity of keeping that system in check and various modalities that support healthy hormonal balance.Hormones are chemical messengers that communicate with cells to regulate essential functions like growth, stress response, reproduction, emotions and metabolism. When hormone levels are diminished, such as during menopause, or in excess, such as being exposed to toxic environments, the delicate endocrine system becomes unbalanced, resulting in uncomfortable symptoms and even disease. Hormonal imbalance can cause insomnia, fatigue, irregular periods, hot flashes, mood swings, lack of focus, decreased libido, infertility, depression and headaches. Often, they can be the root of thyroid dysfunction, skin problems, hair loss, autoimmune disorders, weight gain, osteoporosis, irritability, anxiety, memory loss and even allergies.

Aromatherapy

Essential oils have the ability to mimic and complement hormones, triggering beneficial actions which support the endocrine system without destabilizing it. Basil Essential Oil  is antidepressant, energizing and restorative and commonly used in the treatment of amenorrhea, fatigue, abdominal cramps, infertility, lactation problems, mental strain, migraines and ovarian cysts. Bergamot Essential Oil can be used for depression, anxiety, emotional and physical stress and PMS. Ylang Ylang Essential Oil influences sexual energy and enhances relationships while also stimulating the adrenal glands. Cypress Essential Oil  is used for dysmenorrhea, endometriosis, menopause, menorrhagia, fatigue and environmental stress. Other oils respected for their ability to alleviate the symptoms of hormonal imbalance like PMS & menopause, increase libido and calm the mind include lavender, peppermint, rosemary and patchouli.

Reflexology

Based on the traditional Chinese medicine energy meridian system, reflexology connects points on the hands and feet with corresponding organs and systems. Applying pressure to specific areas can promote the health of the pituitary, thyroid and adrenal glands, and reproductive organs. Reflexology balances cortisol levels, removes toxins from the body, boosts the immune system, improves circulation and stimulates reproductive glands, restoring the body to a natural homeostasis.Reiki

According to Reiki, each endocrine gland corresponds to one of the seven chakras. If energy is blocked in a particular chakra, then the associated functions are affected and can cause irregularity in the secretion of the hormones. Reiki practitioners place hands on each of the chakras, healing the glands and balancing the flow. Reiki energy dissolves barriers and clears the path for energy to flow through every chakra, balancing the endocrine system and hormone secreting glands.

Cranial Sacral Therapy (CST)

A CST practitioner enhances physiological functioning through the use of sensitive mobilization of the cranial sacral system. CST rebalances energy and the physical body during pregnancy, postpartum and menopause, relieving stress and any residual memories of trauma. CST can be used to help clear restrictions that may be interfering with conception and is supportive for dealing with painful emotions. CST also encourages healthy conception and pregnancy by regulating the pituitary gland, reducing physical tensions and relieving stress levels. CST can even enhance vitality and healthy functioning of the reproductive organs by releasing restrictions in surrounding tissues of the pelvic region.

Hormone balance is integral to well-being and health. Responsible for every vital function of the body, hormones and the endocrine system can be supported by many bodywork modalities. Aromatherapy, reflexology, Reiki and CST are a few examples of how gentle, non-invasive therapies can effectively re-balance the body, prevent illness and ultimately, help us feel better.
