Carrier Oils

What are carrier oils?

Carrier oils are a type of oils derived from the fatty parts of plants such as the seeds, kernels, or nuts. They are also known as massage base oils, fixed oils, or vegetable oils. They are called base oils because they will compose the largest portion of a blended massage oil or cream.

How do I use carrier oils?

Carrier oils are used to dilute and compliment essential oils or other concentrated oils. Essential oils should not be applied to the skin before first combining them with carrier oil or irritation may occur. Carrier oils are used to make massage oils, lotions, and creams, as well as aromatic soaps, candles, body and bath oils, and balms. Carrier oils all have their own unique properties and their odors range from scentless to aromatic. The type you choose will depend on the purpose of the blend.

What are blended oils?

Massage oil blends are made from a combination of carrier oils and essential oils. Carrier oils comprise the majority of the blend, with the concentrated essential oils being added to enhance the function and aroma of the mixture.

How do I use blended oils?

Massage blends which you purchase from us are ready for use in therapy. If you have reason to believe that you or your client will be sensitive to any of the ingredients in the blend it is best to test the oil on a small patch of skin.

Why should I use an oil blend instead of a cream or lotion?

Using massage oil versus lotions or creams is a matter of personal preference (both for the therapist and client) and the type of massage. Massage oils will provide you the longest glide in your therapy. The skin will also absorb massage oil more slowly than it will massage lotion or cream. It is important to match the type of massage oil, cream, or lotion with the goals of the massage. The descriptions of each of our lotions explain the benefits it offers.

Lotions and Creams

How do lotions and creams differ from massage oils?

Unlike massage oil, lotions and creams contain water and can contain thickening agents such as vegetable emulsifier and wax. The feel of lotions and creams is much different than the feel of oil. They both provide more absorption and a shorter glide than oil.

How/why should I use a massage cream?

Massage creams provide a balance between more absorbable massage lotions and more workable massage oils. Their glide is less than that of oil but more than that of lotion. Massage creams are often ideal for working on sore, injured, or spasmodic muscles. They are also a good option for working on patients that do not like the feel of massage oils when you still need a good amount of glide. It is important to match the type of massage oil, cream, or lotion with the goals of the massage. The descriptions of each of our lotions explain the benefits it offers.

How/why should I use a massage Lotion?

Of oils, creams, and lotions, massage lotions provide the shortest glide and most absorption. These qualities make it ideal for deep tissue work. Without putting excessive drag on the skin, they provide the therapist the greatest working grip and allow him or her to penetrate deep into their client’s muscles. It is important to match the type of massage oil, cream, or lotion with the goals of the massage. The descriptions of each of our lotions explain the benefits it offers.

Essential Oils

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are the highly concentrated essences of aromatic plants. These essences occur naturally in the plants, often to aid in their reproduction (for example to attract bees) or as a defense against natural predators. They are extracted from raw plants through various methods, the most common of which is distillation. Essential oils typically come from the plant’s leaves, bark, flowers, roots and fruit rinds. They oils have been used for centuries for medicinal purposes. The benefits and aromas vary widely from one type to another.

How do I use essential oils?

Essential oils are used for various purposes. They are used in massage oils, lotions, and creams. Essential oils are an important tool in aroma therapy. They can be added to baths, applied to compresses, used in aroma therapy diffusers, or inhaled. Essential oils are also used in soaps, perfumes, laundry, to scent incense, and in Potpourri. For the purpose of massage, essential oils should be combined with carrier oils. Once you have made a blend that you like, test it on a small portion of your skin to be sure it does not cause any irritation.

Are essential oils dangerous?

Essential oils are not dangerous when used properly. Because they are extremely concentrated, their direct application to the skin can cause irritation. Essential oils should always be combined with carrier oils before use in a massage. We recommend wearing gloves when mixing essential oils. In the case of accidentally applying too much essential oil to the skin, dilute with carrier oil, not water because the two combine better and allow you to retain the intended therapeutic benefits of the treatment. Essential oils should only be taken internally under the supervision or instructions of a trained professional.
